Professional Credentials

A.P.P. Logo The Accredited Purchasing Practioner (A.P.P.) program was established in 1996 for entry level buyers who are primarily engaged in the tactical and operational side of purchasing, and persons who work outside the organizations purchasing and supply management department, but nevertheless have definate procurement responsibilities.

An extensive study of ISM's credentialing programs was conducted in association with Knapp & Associates International, Inc. and one of the major findings of the study was a diminishing interest in the A.P.P. designation within the supply management community. This diminishing interest manifested itself in declining numbers overall and decreasing support by employers. This trend also prevented the program from remaining financially feasible. The ISM Board of Directors supported the decision to cease issuing new A.P.P.s. In 2005, ISM began to reallocate credentialing resources to activities of greater interest and benefit to supply management professionals.

February 28, 2007 was the last day candidates could postmark their A.P.P. Original & Original Lifetime application. Applications postmarked after this date will not be accepted for Original & Original Lifetime Accreditation. However, ISM will continue to accept A.P.P. reaccreditation applications beyond February 28, 2007. ISM has no plans to discontinue reaccreditation.

C.P.M. Logo The Certified Purchasing Manager (C.P.M.) program was established in 1974 and became the first nationally accepted standard of competence and knowledge for the purchasing and supply management field. The C.P.M. program focuses on the managerial, administrative, and strategic, as well as the tactical aspects of the supply management function. Over 34,000 professionals have earned their C.P.M. designation. This designation is designed for individuals working in any of the private, public or non-profit work sectors.

NAPM Columbus currently provides review classes twice a year (Fall and Spring) for individuals studying to take their C.P.M. Exam. You can register for these classes via the calendar section of our website.

CPSM Logo The Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM) program will debut in 2008. The new Qualification will be relevant internationally and reflect the expanded education, skills and experience needed for supply managers to be successful as the profession evolves into the 21st Century.
